Why Trump pulled out of the Paris Climate agreement?

What is Paris climate agreement?

The Paris Climate agreement is an accord under the United Nations Framework Convention on climate change which deals with the mitigation of greenhouse gases, adaptation and with the arrangement of finance till 2020 to reduce emissions on a massive scale. The agreement was agreed unanimously by all the 196 parties to the UNFCCC and was adopted on the 12th of December 2015 in Paris, France. The deal bounds signatories to pursue measures that can help reduce global warming.

The agreement does not force any of the parties to achieve fixed targets within a specified period. However, makes it compulsory for the members to perform better than their previous indicators.  The other important thing about Paris Climate Agreement is that it encourages rich countries to help developing countries to cope with the emissions of harmful gases since most of the pollution on the world level is caused by the industrialized nations.

Why Trump choose not to be a party to the Paris climate agreement?

Under the Paris climate agreement, it is the responsibility of the developed countries including the United States of America to significantly reduce their contribution to the global carbon emissions. This reduction means the overhauling of industrial emission systems, the shutting down of many coal energy projects and the conversion of hazards producing energy projects to green energy.

Donald Trump is of the view that these measures can result in loss of jobs on a massive level and can even threaten the industrial dominance of America vis-à-vis China and India.

Also under the Accord, developed countries have been made responsible for financing projects in less developed countries that can help in the reduction of emission of fossil fuels.  This point of the Paris Climate agreement has also been severely criticized by Trump who thinks is wastage of the American taxpayers’ money.

Who is the real winner of the withdrawal from Paris Climate agreement?

The withdrawal of America from the Paris climate agreement has clearly been good news for the companies that produce conventional energy from the materials like coal and oil etc.
It also is a blessing for those workers who were on the verge of losing jobs because of the restrictions that have to be put in place as a result of this accord.

Who is the real loser?

The biggest loser of the Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris climate accord is humanity. The pull out will not only allow the American industry to unleash a wave of dangerous emissions but will also give an excuse to other powers like China and India to somehow abandon the path for which the accord had been agreed. The withdrawal can have longtime repercussions for humanity as a whole but specifically for the developing countries which are worst affected as a result of global warming.

The losers also include environmental activists, NGOs, United Nations and all those world bodies that are striving to put some halt to the global warming. Last but not the least, the ultimate loser is America. By quitting the Paris climate agreement not only the United States threatening its future generations but also leaving a leadership gap for other countries to fill in which China is eager to fill.

What next?

The executive order to leave the Paris Climate agreement has practically resulted in the American withdrawal, but the initiative is being opposed by most of the influentials in America. A large number of mayors have heavily criticized Trump’s executive and have vowed to work with international bodies to reduce emissions of the greenhouse gas as America had pledged during Obama era. Apart from mayors, most of the CEOs of the multinational companies are also speaking for Paris Climate agreement.

The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, in his tweet, cleared his intentions by saying that every new data center build by our company will be running on renewable energy sources. Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla, criticized Trump’s move and resigned from the presidential council of advisors. These influentials have been joined by the pro-environment activists, NGOs and politicians from across the America in their support for the Paris Climate agreement.

What will be the effect of Trump’s decisions to withdraw from the agreement requires time and only time will tell whether it was a good decision or bad decision but one thing is clear and that is human life is precious than material benefits.
